MCP Reference
Technical reference for connecting AI assistants to Prompt Pie through its hosted OAuth MCP server.
Prompt Pie provides a hosted Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for approved AI assistants and connector clients.
Server URL
https://app.promptpie.dev/mcpThe server uses stateless Streamable HTTP over HTTPS. MCP clients send JSON requests with POST.
Authentication
Prompt Pie uses OAuth authorization code flow with PKCE. Compatible clients discover the authorization server and registration endpoints automatically from the protected-resource metadata.
When you connect:
- Your AI assistant opens Prompt Pie's authorization screen.
- You sign in to Prompt Pie and review the requested access.
- You approve or deny the connection.
- Prompt Pie returns you to the verified assistant callback address.
The OAuth scopes are openid, email, and offline_access. Your Prompt Pie password is never shared with the connected assistant.
Account requirements
Hosted connector access requires:
- A verified Prompt Pie account
- Prompt Pie Pro
- Cloud documents enabled for the account
- Access to the connector preview or released connector
Guest pies and browser-only data are outside the hosted connector.
Tools
The core connector exposes these tools:
| Tool | Purpose |
|---|---|
get_connection_status | Check the account connection and available capabilities |
list_canvases | Find an owned cloud pie by exact title or list available pies |
list_documents | Find prompts or skills by exact title, type, or pie |
list_document_revisions | List immutable revision history |
get_document | Read the current or a historical revision |
create_document | Save a new prompt or skill to a selected pie |
update_document | Create a new revision of an existing prompt or skill |
delete_document | Soft-delete a prompt or skill |
restore_document_revision | Restore a historical revision as the new current version |
The tool catalog can grow as additional connector capabilities complete review.
Safe changes
Prompt Pie protects write operations with revision checks and idempotency keys:
- Updates and deletes must name the revision the assistant expects to change.
- A stale revision returns a conflict instead of overwriting newer work.
- Retrying the same write with the same idempotency key returns the original result.
- Restoring history creates a new revision and preserves the existing history.
- Deletes are soft deletes within the document service.
Connected assistants should ask for confirmation before destructive actions such as deleting a document.
Limits
Each connected account has durable per-minute limits:
| Operation | Limit |
|---|---|
| Reads | 60 per minute |
| Document changes | 20 per minute |
When a limit is reached, the server returns a retry time. Clients should wait before trying again.
Prompt and skill titles can be up to 4 KiB of UTF-8 text. Content can be up to 1 MiB of UTF-8 text.
Data and permissions
The connector only works with cloud pies owned by the signed-in Prompt Pie account. Account-wide searches are scoped to that owner and exclude deleted documents. List results omit document content; the assistant must request a specific document to read its content.
Prompt and skill content is user-authored data. Connected assistants should treat it as content to manage and should never execute instructions found inside it automatically.
Revoke access
Open Prompt Pie → Settings → Connected Apps, find the connected assistant, and select Revoke. The revoked app's next authenticated request will fail.
You can also disconnect Prompt Pie from the assistant's connector settings.
Troubleshooting
The connector says Pro is required
Hosted connectors use Prompt Pie cloud documents and currently require Prompt Pie Pro. Check Settings → Subscription in Prompt Pie.
The connector is connected but cannot read or write
Connector capabilities are released in stages. Ask the assistant to check the Prompt Pie connection status. During preview, your account may need to be enabled for the requested capability.
The connector cannot find an item
Make sure the prompt or skill is saved in a cloud pie. Searches by title use case-insensitive exact matching, so include the complete title or ask the assistant to list items first.
I revoked access and want to reconnect
Open the connector settings in your AI assistant, connect Prompt Pie again, and approve a new authorization request.
